One Piece Is Getting A Live-Action TV Series Adaption

In the celebration of legendary manga One Piece’s 20th anniversary, One Piece is getting a live-action TV adaption, it will not be a Japanese One Piece Live-Action adaption but a foreign one. The Straw Hat Crew will be turning into reality with the upcoming live-action TV Series.

Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief, Nakano Hiroyuki announced the news earlier today in Tokyo, Japan. In the screenshot below, the screen next to him states that One Piece is getting a foreign drama.

This is the first live-action venture of One Piece manga in it’s 20 years. One Piece live-action drama will be produced by Hollywood producer Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow ITV Studios, which is also doing a live-action Cowboy Bebop. They have previously produced Prison Break and Last Man Standing.

One Piece live-action release date is still unknown, but we are anxiously waiting for the details to emerge. We can tell you one thing about this, it’s going to be huge, this is one of the biggest project of One Piece Franchise in 20 years.

Monkey D. Luffy – One Piece

One Piece’s creator Eiichiro Oda on One Piece live-action: “There were several stories about making live-action film in last 20 years, absolutely didn’t want to betray” fans who’ve been supporting the series for the past twenty years. “That was the condition from me.”

Weekly Shonen Jump’s Editor-in-Chief, Hiroyuki Nakano.

According to Hiroyuki Nakano, the reason behind One Piece will be getting a foreign TV Drama is because, One Piece’s creator Eiichiro Oda felt like it would be possible to ensure quality and not betray fans, as foreign TV drama have higher budget than Japanese ones.

When Hiroyuki Nakano was asked “How many episodes One Piece live-action will be getting?” Nakano said “no comment.” Also as a part of 20th anniversary celebrations, July 22nd has been officially designated as One Piece day by the Japan Anniversary Association. I don’t know about the rest of the world but yeah, you read that right. Japan officially has a One Piece Day every year now.

The reason why they have chosen July 22nd as One Piece day is because that was the day when One Piece began serialisation in Weekly Shonen Jump. They are holding a huge collaboration with Kyoto for an all-new treasure-hunting event in Japan!

This is the first foreign One Piece live-action TV adaption, back in 2015, One Piece manga was the basis of a Japanese live-action TV drama(see photo above) in which a yakuza member who ends up in the hospital, where his characters mistakenly eats the gum-gum fruit that made Luffy all rubbery. It made One Piece real but in a different way, I guess.
