As we know, Kaneki is Tokyo Ghoul’s main character.
Since a lot of people find him really deep, today I’m gonna introducing you an analysis of his personality, making a comparison between the Kaneki we were used to seeing before the second season and the Kaneki who is born during that season.
If you remember, Tokyo Ghoul first season ends with Kaneki who is being tortured by Yamori; those horrible and continuous tortures brought the boy to feel and show some changes. Let’s see them:
First of all, Kaneki’s hair became completely white; this is probably due to a strong manifestation of the Marie Antoinette Syndrome, which makes people’s hair become white after having felt a strong pain and/or a strong sense of fear.
Secondly, Kaneki’s fingernails blackened; this is probably a mistake of us: in reality, they didn’t become black, but they have been removed by Yamori so many times that they stopped regrowing, so that the blood coming out from those wounds dried, acquiring its classical black color.
The biggest change happened in Kaneki’s personality: he left his previous ideology of “being hurt rather than hurting others” in order to start crushing those who have some faults; another change is that, while before he was used to hating Rize because she caused his transformation into a monster called “Ghoul”, now he has accepted his “Ghoul essence”, being conscious that he isn’t human anymore. Moreover, maybe because Kaneki developed a kind of mental instability disorder after Yamori’s tortures, he became really brutal and merciless against his enemies, and this in order to protect his friends; anyway, he’s still capable of showing his gentle nature to people he cares about.
In addiction, there’s another particular that I noticed and that I also found really interesting: since his general change, Kaneki also started to prefer monochrome clothing; in my personal opinion, this is because before he was an irresolute boy who couldn’t take important decisions, he was “grey”, in the sense that he couldn’t decide “white” or “black”, he just used to stay “grey” (in the middle between black and white) in order to avoid to be in contrast with someone. On the contrary, now he’s a lot more convinced than before, so that he doesn’t mind if saying “white” or “black” to someone could cause some bad reaction, he just says what he thinks and he does what he wants, not caring about other people’s opinion.
In conclusion, I think Kaneki is one of the deepest characters in the whole anime world: he felt happiness, he felt fear, he felt pain, he felt everything a human can feel and also more, but guess what? It didn’t matter how many times he fell, he has always had the strength to stand up again, even stronger than before.
